How to Delegate Well Within Your Team: 6 Easy Tips
Delegating deserves a lot more credit than it gets.
Delegating, done well, is the key to growing your business. Delegating done poorly, or not at all, is the recipe for a stagnant business, burnt-out management and a resentful team.
So, how do you delegate well within your team? Here’s 6 easy tips:
-
Know your team
When it comes to delegating, don’t just look at who has capacity, look at who is capable. There’s a big difference.
-
Remember people don’t think like you
Explain what every part of the task is, even parts you assume seem clear. Inform whoever you are delegating the task to, of any do’s and don’ts and take the time to ensure they are clear about what they need to be doing.
-
Be aware it’s a process
In order to delegate well, you can’t just hand everything over all at once (as nice as that would be). Instead work together to start with, then slowly give them more and more responsibility, until they are quite happy managing the workload themselves.
-
Accountability is key
Make sure your team member knows what they need to do, what you are expecting and when it’s due.
-
Check-in
Check and see how they are getting on but don’t micromanage. You gave them ownership of the task so it’s theirs. Just ensure they know you are there for support and be aware of how the work is coming along.
-
Don’t make delegation scary for your team
If they make mistakes, show them how to rectify it without getting angry. On the flip side, if they do the job as you asked, be sure to thank them for it.
