Here is 3 Porkie Pies that we tell ourselves when we have the wrong person on our team.

The first porkie pie that we tell ourselves is that somebody is better than nobody. Bearing in mind that the wrong person can cost 15 times their salary, that wrong somebody is costing you a lot more than nobody. And it’s not just the money, think about the stress they are causing you and the negative effect they can have on your team and their productivity. If they are not the right team member then nobody is definitely better than the wrong somebody!

The second porkie pie we tell ourselves is: Firing somebody is bad for moral. Well if you fire a really good person for a mistake when you are angry, then yes, that would be bad for moral. But when you have done the PIP and really tried to help them and they don’t respond, don’t you think your team would actually be rather grateful to you for letting them go? When the wrong person holds your team back, you’re likely to find that moral will improve when you have done what you know needs to be done.

The third porkie pie to watch out for is: Just move them to another department or give them something else to do and things will improve.

Well by all means try this once or twice but are you continually moving them around when you know it is time they moved on? If deep down you know they are the wrong person for your company then what difference is giving them another role going to make? If not now, then when are you going to do what you know your business needs you to do?
